History of Lac and its Bangles:

Lac is mentioned in numerous ancient scripts including Mahabharata and Vedas. “Lakshagraha’’, where Duryodhana wanted to burn and kill Pandavas, was made of lac. In Atharva Veda, there is a brief reference to the Lac insect, its habitat, and its usefulness. Some scripts also mention that Lord Shiva gifted these bangles to Parvati as a token of marriage. Manihars, the community that is gifted with the art of making lac bangles, were invited by Maharaja Jay Singh during the days when he was shifting his capital to pink city.

Making of Lac Bangles:

Some plant sucking, crimson-red colored insects such as Laccifer lacca, Carteria lacca, and Tachardia lacca invade the branches of chosen host trees and secretes Lac, a natural scarlet resin. This lac is refined and converted to shellac. The artisans buy this shellac and it acts as the main raw material for lac bangles. Lac and other raw materials like chapadi, giya powder and birja is heated over burning coals called ‘Sigdi’. After this whole process of 6-7 hours, artisans give birth to a dozen of colorful, tinkling bangles.

• Lac bangles are considered to be a sign of good omen and are worn by married women in all auspicious occasions.
• Lac bangles are available in many different colors. Different colors have different significance. Red color is worn for energy and prosperity, while green is considered auspicious for fertility and new life.
• Yellow plays a vital part in bringing happiness and orange is worn for success.
• Gold is believed to bring prosperity and good luck, while silver for strength and peace of mind.
• There is another interesting fact about bangles. According to Ayurveda, bangles provide energy to body, especially bones.

Therefore, right from the ancient times, women used to wear bangles, as bangles have a positive impact on wrist bones, which usually becomes weaker as a woman age.
